Champ-de-Mars Square has become one of the main refuges for street children, like Yolerne, photographed here in July , in Port-au-Prince. Like all those in her situation, she cannot shake off her fragile and nervous air when spoken to. Many young girls are faced with the same plight, and their number has grown since the earthquake of and Hurricane Matthew in , which destroyed hundreds of thousands of homes. Junior Fleurimont, a Haitian sociologist and professor at Jean Price-Mars University, refers to them as children totally cut off from their families, who choose or are forced to live on the streets on a permanent basis. But in Haiti, the main structural factor at the root of this problem is poverty: 78 per cent of the population lives below the absolute poverty line and 56 per cent in extreme poverty. Some have been thrown out of their homes to reduce the number of mouths to feed, others have fled abusive situations. According to the Haitian Ministry of Public Health and Population, nearly 87 per cent of children between the ages of five and 17 had already worked in , including , children in forced domestic labour. The situation has not been resolved since then.
That's the beautiful way photographer Thibault Carron describes the experience of meeting and photographing the women of Haiti. Carron, who is from France but has lived in Montreal for nearly 10 years, told The Huffington Post they decided to head to Haiti since many people in Montreal have roots there. In a post for Bored Panda , Carron wrote about what truly caught his attention while in Haiti: "the strength, will and pride The portraits capture a diverse array of Haitian women, from girls in school to mothers with their children. And Carron told HuffPost that while traveling around Haiti, it was these women that he was particularly struck by. Carron said that meeting a woman named Marie-Sherline was especially inspirational. According to him, Marie-Sherline's left leg had been amputated after the earthquake in Haiti. But despite that trauma, she went on to start a small business by selling everyday products to people on the street, using the proceeds to care for herself, her daughters and her mother.
