Every week for the foreseeable future, Vulture will be selecting one film to watch as part of our Friday Night Movie Club. When The Social Network opened in theaters on October 1, , it was greeted with a lot of chin-stroking over whether it was too hard on Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. They all had a point. Sorkin has never made a secret of his contempt for all things online, elevating relationship dramas over details about the digital platform. Ten years in, The Social Network has held up infinitely better than the internet idealism running through so much of the criticism that was aimed at the film at the time.

Adapted from Ben Mezrich 's book The Accidental Billionaires , it portrays the founding of social networking website Facebook and the resulting lawsuits. Neither Zuckerberg nor any other Facebook staff were involved with the project, although Saverin was a consultant for Mezrich's book. The Social Network was praised for its direction, screenplay, acting, editing, and score. It was named one of the best films of the year by 78 critics, and named the best by 22 critics, the most of any film that year. It was also chosen by the National Board of Review as the best film of In , it was voted 27th among films considered the best of the 21st century by international film critics. Returning to his dorm, Zuckerberg writes an insulting entry about Albright on his LiveJournal blog. He creates a campus website called Facemash by hacking into college databases to steal photos of female students, then allowing site visitors to rate their attractiveness. After traffic to the site crashes parts of Harvard's computer network, Zuckerberg is given six months of academic probation.
